Rio Grande Basin Initiative

2009-10 Deliverables

Task 4 Research
Principal Investigator(s): Diane Rowland

We mutually agree for Diane Rowland to deliver the following during the period of July 1, 2009, to June 30, 2010, using funds from the Rio Grande Basin Initiative:

  1. Establish and conduct a research project investigating alternative irrigation methods for cotton and oilseeds that increase irrigation efficiency including: subsurface drip irrigation; LESA overhead irrigation; LEPA irrigation utilizing drag socks and partial rootzone drying (PRD); and surface tape irrigation.
  2. Establish and conduct a research project investigating the feasibility of conservation tillage and its water saving potential for the Uvalde region. Within this project, we will compare soil moisture, plant stress, root growth, and yield differences among conventional and strip tilled corn, cotton, and sunflower.
  3. Participate in technology transfer activities including community presentations, grower meetings, and collaboration with local extension agents on alternative production strategies to increase water productivity in the Wintergarden region.
  4. Maintain existing weather station network.
